Find information for accessibility in specific areas across the park. Water resources are integral to ecosystem health and function and fundamental to a variety of recreational opportunities at the park. Walk around or hike up different trails for views of Jordan Pond and the surrounding scenery.

Park History

We highly recommend taking time to relax with a popover and soak in the view of Jordan Pond. This was one of our favorite things to do in Acadia National Park. The current restaurant and gift shop building was built in 1981. Popovers and tea have been served at Jordan Pond House since 1895 when Nellie McIntire started baking them in this spot. The original farmhouse was built by the Jordan family of Seal Harbor.

Please follow posted rules and regulations when visiting to help protect park resources. On June 21, 1979, the original Jordan Pond House building was destroyed by fire. Through the work of the Island Foundation, private funds were contributed to build a replacement, which was completed in 1982. The original farm house was constructed by the Jordan family, locals for whom the pond and house were named. Give yourself 30 to 45 minutes to find a parking spot during the busy hours and summer. You can work off a tiny bit of popover goodness by walking along the walking trail by Jordan Pond.

Some of the bridges are the most visited and photographed sites in Acadia. Upon completion of the current building in 1982, tea on the lawn has been an uninterrupted summer tradition. “I was so ready,” she admits, “and I was so, so, so in love with the Trout Farm. I still love it madly.” Thanks to the careful ministrations and lively personalities of Karen and Jon, the Trout Farm lives on, full of love, warmth and merriment. With imagination and skill, they have redeemed a worthy property and preserved a beloved piece of Valley history.

Turn Right onto Jordan Pond Rd./Park Loop Rd, where you’ll find the restaurant. Seeing attractions like the Jordan Pond house are always more impactful when seen from above in our aerial tour of Mt. Park Highlights

‘The first popovers and tea were served here by Mr. and Mrs. ‘Thomas and Nellie McIntire around 1895. They were responsible for the character and atmosphere of the original Jordan Pond House, with its birch bark dining rooms and massive fieldstone fireplaces. Probably her largest work of art to date is her home, the historic Trout Farm, located centrally in the Santa Ynez Valley. Since buying the property in 1991, she has restored the house—built by the Hanley family in 1886—enlarged rooms and brought the 1940s-era trout pond back to sparkling life. In 1839, George and John Jordan acquired the property and ran a sawmill business, harvesting timber from the surrounding hillsides.

Entranced with the area, he made it his home as soon as he could. In 1901, he began the quest to set aside land on the Island to become a National Park. Through land donations and monetary donations used to purchase land, Dorr slowly acquired most of the island in a public trust. In 1916, the federal government accepted the donation of this trust and President Woodrow Wilson declared it a National Monument. Dorr became the first superintendent, continuing to acquire land and lobby for the Monument to become a Park.

Many hiking trails, carriage roads, and the Park Loop Road provide access to the Jordan Pond House. The original building burned down in 1979, and the current restaurant building was built in 1982. The original farmhouse on the property was completed in 1847 by George and John Jordan. Today, the Jordan Pond House landscape continues to provide a view of its role as a scenic, recreational destination. Jordan Pond is one of the park's most pristine lakes, with outstanding surrounding mountain scenery. Much of the photography that I do within Acadia National Park is done very early in the morning.

Jordan Pond House Cultural Landscape

Auto access to the restaurant is provided via the Park Loop Road. Jordan Pond House, a restaurant and shop with a long tradition within Acadia National Park, sits on a hill overlooking a beautiful lawn along the Jordan Pond. Guests have been enjoying these amazing views and dining at this site since 1893 when Nellie McIntire, the first proprietor, started baking and serving her famous popovers out of the restaurant. A visit to Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum opens the door to layer upon layer of intriguing Malibu history. The enchanted site, where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, was once home to the Chumash Indians, who thrived there until the late 18th century.

In the new kitchen, what looks like a country cupboard beneath the bar holds a dedicated icemaker, while an indoor barbecue nestles in a “cabinet” of rock and concrete. In the shower, the image of a cowboy fishing from a rock amid swaying reeds plays out in river rock and colorful bits of tile. Wallpaper leaves and a genuine tree trunk set into one corner complete the idyll. To create a natural surface on the kitchen floor, Alden mingled fractured shell tile with river rock. When Karen asked for a concrete sink with a trout motif, Alden went one better, carving fins and tail into the wooden counter and lining the sink with a mosaic of flowing water.

In 1946, Rockefeller began a company to run the Jordan Pond House restaurant and ensure that the tradition of luncheon, tea and popovers would continue. Since 1893, guests to the park have been enjoying delicious tea and fantastically fluffy popovers on the picturesque Jordan Pond House Lawn. Pioneered by Nellie McIntire, the first proprietor of the restaurant, this tradition is certainly one that you don’t want to miss out on.

If you entered the Park Loop Road at the beginning on the northeastern side of the island, it is a matter of just continuing around the loop until you arrive. A quicker way from Bar Harbor is to go west on Route 233 then access the Park Loop Road there. Go directly south past the entrance to Cadillac Mountain until eventually arriving at Jordan Pond (on the right). If on the southern side of the island, take the Stanley Brook Road entrance to Acadia National Park in Seal Harbor and continue north. This will connect up with the Park Loop Road just south of the Jordan Pond House. During peak season, it can be difficult to find a parking spot.

For people wanting to hike the Shore Trail, you may want to park in the North parking lot. No swimming is allowed nor are pets allowed in the water as this is the water supply for Seal Harbor. Jordan Pond is a glacier formed tarn with a maximum water depth of 150 feet (46 m). There are steep inclines on the left and right sides (West and East).

To protect the park’s extraordinary biological diversity and its most valued natural and cultural resources. To maintain ongoing and updated information of said cultural and natural history pertaining to all aspects of the Museum and House. To assist financially through fundraising activities in accomplishing the above objectives and purposes. There are a variety of photographers who offer photography workshops in Acadia National Park during the year, especially during the autumn season. Images with the Bubbles in the distance have become classics that instantly convey the location. This is unique in that the pond sits between two mountains on the eastern and western sides.

Jordan Pond in Acadia

I NEED you to order at least one probably 3 servings of the Jordan Pond House Popovers! I would think about flying to Maine just to savor a few more of these popovers they are that good. Acadia lays claim to the title of the first Eastern National Park. It became Lafayette National Park in 1919 and then, with the addition of the Schoodic Peninsula, Acadia National Park in 1929. George Dorr, a Bostonian, first visited Mount Desert Island with his parents at age 13.

A path leads down to the water from the restaurant and joins with a hiking trail that goes to the left and to the right. Going right will take you to the North parking lot and further around the East side of Jordan Pond. If you go left at the bottom of the hill, you have an option to walk on the Carriage Road or walk on the walking trail close to the western edge of the shore. The National Park Service has done a great job recently constructing a boardwalk along this trail in sections.

Later, the Rindge family owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline. The Rindge family’s daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Merritt Huntley Adamson, used the site to construct a beach house, now the historic Adamson House museum. Jordan Pond is located right next to the western side of the Park Loop Road which happens to be open to two way traffic in this area. There are several ways to get here depending on where you will be coming from on Mount Desert Island.

Jordan Pond House

The forty-five miles of scenic carriage roads throughout Acadia were built between 1913 and 1940 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He built the roads as a car-free, scenic means for himself and his neighbors to travel through and view beautiful Mount Desert Island. He began building even as plans were underway for much of the land to become a National Monument with the intent that the roads become a part of the preserved land. Rockefeller took his time about the creation of these horse roads.

The water is exceptionally clear with an average visibility depth of 46 feet (14 m) but this has been measured as high as 60 feet (18 m), the most ever recorded in the State of Maine. However, non motor boats such as canoes and kayaks are permitted. The kayak and canoe launch site for this is via the Jordan Pond North parking lot, a short distance from the restaurant.

Explore the National Park Service

Built in 1929, it occupies one of the most idyllic oceanfront spots in all of Southern California. Equally compelling is the story of the close-knit family who once lived here and whose aura continues to permeate the interior, where most of their original furnishings remain. Near the end of this reign, John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the property and donated it to the National Park Service to ensure its continued existence.

The first settlers conducted a logging operation, establishing a small mill near the foot of the pond. The original farm house was built by the Jordan family of Seal Harbor, for whom the pond and house were named. With all the accoutrements of a well-stocked antique shop, the “cowgirl bathroom” encourages guests to linger, especially over the framed portraits of the 19th century couple who built the house. Elsewhere, bent-willow chairs bump against natural wood wainscoting, and a 1930s school desk sits beneath weathered oars, creels and duck decoys decorating the walls. The Spanish Colonial Revival style home—today a National Historic Site, California Historical Landmark, and a California State Park—casts a magical spell, allowing visitors to evoke old California in a way few places can.

Jordan Pond House, Acadia National Park

If my primary goal is to shoot Jordan Pond, I usually want the surface of the pond to be as calm as possible and this often takes place very early as there is usually a calm before the sunrise. For a while, the height of the mountains gives some added wind protection but it soon disappears as the sun rises. Depending on what you want to begin taking photos of will require the basic choice of where to park. Choose the North Parking area if you want to get to the Pond in the shortest amount of time, or are carrying a lot of heavy gear.

Now serving a wide array of dishes and meals, from fresh lobster to popover ice cream sundaes, this combination of both culinary and scenic delights is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is situated at the southwestern corner of the Park Loop Road, overlooking Jordan Pond from its southern shore. Two rôche moutonnées, known as "The Bubbles", provide the backdrop to the view from the house's lawn at the rear of the 60-acre property. This will save you a lot of stress in finding a parking space. To provide for the inspiration and education of our visitors through interpretive activities and to assist in the preservation of the historic Adamson House.

It re-opened in 1982 and continues the traditions started more than a century ago. The roads include 17 stone bridges, 16 of which were financed by Rockefeller. The bridges are steel reinforced concrete, finished with stone in order to have a rustic, 19th century appearance.

He cared more for the overall appearance and quality of the project than for its prompt completion. Parking can be found in the north lower lot of the Jordan Pond area. Some paths are accessible and offer beautiful views of the pond and connections to the carriage roads.

It takes some planning to maximize the amount of images that I can capture before the quality of light changes. If I have begun my shooting on the East coast, I know that I still have some time to get to Jordan Pond because of the mountains between the East coast and Jordan Pond that creates a shadow. It adds to the time before the sunlight bursts above the treetops.

The landscape is significant in areas of conservation, entertainment and recreation, and landscape architecture. The Jordan Pond House landscape has been a scenic, recreational, and dining destination since the early nineteenth century. The building is framed by ornamental plantings, Jordan Pond, and the surrounding mountains of what is now Acadia National Park. 45 miles of historic carriage roads cross the park and provide recreation opportunities free of automobiles. Toward the end of the 19th century, the location became a popular recreational area for summer vacationers. As a result, the Jordan Pond House was turned into a small restaurant.

Royal Caribbean Vs Virgin Voyages: Cruise Ship Comparison With Photos

virgin voyages cruise ships

I was also impressed how the cruise line creates parties and events that everyone shows up for and gets into. On other cruise lines, a deck party might attract a couple hundred guests, but on Virgin's Scarlet Night, pretty much everyone turns out. The menu of JoJo loose leaf teas offers a nice selection of caffeinated and herbal teas. The ultimate in casual dining, The Galley is Scarlet Lady's answer to the cruise ship buffet. It's more of a food hall with multiple themed stations (noodles, tacos, soup and salad, burgers, etc.) where you order by flagging down a waiter. You'll want to make your dinner reservations as soon as you get on board.

Introducing Virgin Voyages’ fourth ship, Brilliant Lady

The Brilliant Suite measures 482 square feet and looks like an expanded version of the Seriously Suite. The extra space allows for a modular couch that can double as a bed; this suite can sleep up to four. Its balcony is slightly longer than the Seriously Suite's, meaning it can offer the larger Champagne table of the Brilliant Suite.

The seven-night Caribbean cruise took me to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. From sundeck yoga to experimental eateries - this vacation is yours to design. Whether you're in the Peek-a-Boo shower inside, or rinsing off on the Peek-a-View shower outside, the ecstasy-inducing sea views pulse through every part of the design of this suite.

What are cruise cabins (staterooms) like on cruise ships?

virgin voyages cruise ships

If you want to feel like a rockstar, you can rent one of the private cabanas on Deck 16. Each costs $250 for a full day and can be reserved at Sailor Services on Deck 5. Inside, you'll find daybeds for lounging and a drinks cooler prepped with fresh-pressed welcome juices. Scarlet Lady has all the requisite poolside and sun deck bars, including ones offering smoothies and juices after your indoor or outdoor workout. One of my favorite traditions on land or sea is afternoon tea, and Scarlet Lady offers a surprisingly impressive one at its Sip Lounge.

Each boat has 86% balcony staterooms and 93% oceanview (outside) cabins. These newbuilds greatly differ from other passenger liners (as design) and target younger and more adventurous travellers (called "sailors"). In February, Virgin replaced Harding UK (Bristol-based global travel retail business) with Starboard Cruise Services (Doral Florida-based company).

What I didn't love about Scarlet Lady

In the summer (August through September 2024) Resilient Lady visits Bordeaux, La Coruna, and Bilbao on the relocation voyage to England. The first unit's construction (Scarlet Lady) started with the steel-cutting on March 22, 2017. In December 2021 was announced the partnership with the House Spirits Distillery () for the fleetwide presence of the brand "Aviation American Gin" (aka Aviation Gin/alcohol volume 42%, produced in Portland Oregon since 2006). Signature cocktails (based on the Aviation Gin) available for ordering at each Virgin ship include "The Double Agent at SIP", "Razzle Dazzle's Electric Fizz", "Stella's Groove at The Manor", "Gunbae's French 75". In mid-November 2021 was announced an investment in Virgin Voyages by Patricof & Co (1969-founded by Alan Patricof, specializing in venture capital investments). The company is part of Apax Partners LLP (London UK-based equity firm) that also includes Multinational Management Group (1972-founded) and Saunders Karp & Megrue (1988-founded).

Getting Healthy at Sea

While we can’t keep irons or steamers in our rooms, as hotels do, for safety reasons, we can provide steamers upon special request. Fresh towels and rags are available from our housekeeping service. An essential that you might not even think about until you realize it’s missing.

Our Sailor Services team makes it easy to plan a cruise in advance, assisting not only with cabins, but also booking flights and even hotels for the days prior to or following your departure. No matter your destination, a cruise cabin is the perfect way to enjoy the luxury of a hotel, but with all the exciting amenities unique to our cruise ships – not to mention waking up to shimmering ocean views. It can be easy to get caught up in the destination when you’re booking a vacation, and almost forget to consider what your accommodations will look like. Your lodging can make or break a trip, which is why we like our cruise cabins to be part of the vacation experience itself.

And there was just the right amount of sauce not to overpower the flavor of the pasta itself. I didn't feel overstuffed after my meal, as I often do when eating pasta. I've had this popular dish at various restaurants, but this rendition stood out because it was made with fresh pasta. While some menus had special dishes for an additional fee, most of the food on board — and everything I ate — was included in the $5,900 ticket price. The diversity was evident with and felt by the passengers and crew, and it seemed everyone was simply happy to be together at sea. I miss Valiant Lady and her crew and hope to sail with Virgin Voyages again soon.

According to the cruise line, Pink Agave's menu was inspired by Mexico. One word of caution is that many of the excursions are extremely large and crowded. One passenger complained of having 40 people on his sailing excursion, while a kayaking trip in Antigua had more than 60 guests. We wished we had known how many people were booked on each excursion before selecting, as we would have chosen smaller Experiences. In addition to featuring more than 20 grab-and-go spots and traditional sit-down eateries, there's the large Galley venue with various vendors arranged in a way similar to what you'd find in a food court or buffet.

The Deck 6 casino is a hopping place at night, partly because it's located between The Red Room performance space and On the Rocks Bar, with the entrance to the Manor nightclub just opposite. Beginners and high rollers alike can sign up for gaming lessons or poker tournaments at the WPT at Sea Poker Room in partnership with the World Poker Tour. However, hands down the most fun you'll have gambling on the ship is at Bingo With The Diva, Scarlet Lady's resident drag queen.

Virgin Voyages (formerly "Virgin Cruises", VirginVoyages.com) is a new cruise line company headquartered in Plantation (Florida USA). Virgin Voyages was created as a joint venture between Virgin Group Ltd (British multinational holding company) and Bain Capital LP (multi-asset investment company), with the latter having a majority (51%) shareholding. The establishment of Virgin Cruises was announced by Virgin Group on December 4, 2014. Yoga, meditation, cycling, HIIT classes, and more — all your group fitness classes are covered. The pappardelle was lighter and chewier than my previous experiences, which I preferred.

Virgin ships don't have a main dining room, buffet restaurant, dress code (formal wear policy), assigned dining times or seating. All these concepts were replaced with intimate (boutique hotel-type) eateries offering 20+ dining options - all of which are included in cruise fares. Among the RockStar Quarters, the Seriously Suite is the most common suite type on board. The bathroom is spacious with a marble tile look, and the terrace is only slightly larger than a standard one, with the same furnishings. Scarlet Lady succeeds in creating intimate spaces onboard a big ship, and I loved all the inviting nooks I found on board.

I would have enjoyed the youthful energy if I had been on a family trip with my cousins and nephews. Extra bathroom space with completely separate toilet and rainshower chambers. Kick back and enjoy the Suite life with uninterrupted sea views (really...even the bathroom has an ocean view). All affected bookings were provided with the option to cancel with a 125% refund (100% monetary refund) plus 25% in FCC (future cruise credit) or rebook with 200% refund in FCC. As a promo offer, all bookings made by June 30, 2020, received up to USD 500 per person in OBC (onboard credit).

OSW provides all the wellness staff, services and products onboard Virgin ships, including yoga and gym trainers, massages, medispa treatments, salon (manicure-pedicure-hairdresser) services. The served facilities include Crow's Nest (outdoor yoga studio), Redemption Spa, Dry-Dock (blowout bar), B-Complex (Fitness Center). Tom McAlpin commented that the company is not to be considered a big player in the cruising industry, but rather "a small boutique line that will offer different experiences".

The Dock House is an indoor lounge where you and your sweetie can sip cocktails flavored with figs and anise while nibbling on mezze, like beet hummus and watermelon and feta salad, and pretending you're in Ibiza. I am generally not a fan of cruise ship buffets, but a five-night cruise on Scarlet Lady gave me new appreciation for them. Scarlet Lady is a ship for independent travelers who don't need their hands held or want to be told what to do by a cruise director (there isn't one).

Find Your Perfect Cruisetour

When planning an Alaska cruise, know that itineraries in July and August command the highest prices and are considered the peak season. Alaska cruises are most heavily discounted during the “shoulder season,” or sailings departing before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. According to the Visitor Volume Report, 65 percent of Alaska visitors in 2009 arrived or departed by cruise ship. You can find the best bargains either very early, before the ship fills up, or at the last minute when lines are trying to fill the last few cabins. In late June, July and early August, cruise ships are often packed with families.

In this untouched wilderness, you’ll find ancient glacial valleys, majestic river canyons and misty emerald forests. Journey into Denali National Park for a glimpse of roaming brown bears and moose. And learn more about the state's rich cultural past at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. Nothing brings you closer to history and adventure than the best Alaska Cruise Tours with Royal Caribbean. To minimize joining the masses during high season, consider a shoulder-season sailing (in late April, May or September), or select a ship that embarks midweek. Saturday and Sunday cruise departures tend to be busiest during the summer months, particularly for families with children.

Is Seward or Whittier a better port for Anchorage?

See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center. Encounter wildlife in their natural habitat at the Fortress of the Bear. Or experience the culture of Russian Alaska on a visit to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and relive Native history at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers.

A handful of cruise lines -- mostly small ship and luxury lines like Cunard, Seabourn and Windstar -- offer Alaska cruises ranging from nine to 14 days in length (generally departing from Vancouver). Mainstream lines have also started offering longer cruises to Alaska from southern West Coast ports like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Due to unpredictable weather, though, there’s a risk of shore excursions being cancelled -- especially boat and helicopter tours. Wet weather aside, late summer months bring the best chances of seeing wildlife on expeditions.

Named for the Northern compass point, Noordam is fitting for a cruise to Alaska. Museum-quality art outfits this ship, from oils to photographs of music legends. Don’t wait any longer, riding the world's longest zip line in Alaska will be an experience you'll never forget while on your next Alaskan mountain adventure. It can bring you to some of the most beautiful port cities in the world. The best Alaska food to try on a cruise includes king crab, salmon, fry bread, birch syrup, wild berries and more. After traveling somewhere new, you want to bring something back with you to remember all of your fun adventures.

Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state. Denali National Park takes you out of the city altogether, into a wilderness full of spruce forests and snow-capped mountain peaks. Adventuring in Alaska is all about getting to know this state's stunning landscape.
